Large storage tank water heaters like the one in this photo are built for buildings that pull a lot of hot water at once: apartment buildings, restaurants, hotels and other business properties. Instead of heating on demand, a storage unit keeps a big volume of water hot and ready, so several fixtures and appliances can draw from it at the same time.
What goes into a job like this
Because these tanks hold so much water and run every day, the details around them matter as much as the tank itself: the supply and return piping, the flue that carries combustion gases out of the building, the relief valve and drain, and enough clearance in the room to service the unit safely.
